Bayero University has completed arrangement to award fifteen million Naira (N15m) scholarships to three hundred less privileged students who find it difficult to pay the university’s registration fee.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello made this known on Wednesday, 15th January, 2020 at a reception organized by the university to honour 68 students who represented the university at various categories of competition, entrepreneurship challenge, sports competition and won medals, as well as student union representatives, who successfully completed their tenure without any problem.
He told the participants that it was the university’s trend to award scholarship to indigent students, noting that a student from the Faculty of Allied Health Science that benefitted with similar scholarship scheme completed his study as the best graduate.
“The University is poised to award its prestigious prize to the overall best student in all its programmes, said the Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor explained that the university appreciated their enormous sacrifice, commitment and dedication to represent and serve the university diligently. This, he said attracted the attention of the University management to call and present certificates of recognition to some of them and monetary award to others.
Prof Bello also said the management has extended the payment of registration fee which is supposed to end on Saturday by one week to enable the beneficiaries and others with financial challenges to pay.
The Chairman Sports Consultative Committee, Professor I.K Abdulsalam told the gathering that Bayero University has excelled in sporting events through winning medals at different events such as football, basketball among others. He expressed optimism that with the support given to the Sports Directorate and Sports Consultative Committee by the University management, sports would be taken to the next level.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, the former SUG President, Comrade Tijjani Bilal Paki, expressed appreciation over the level playing ground given to them by the University Management. He recalled that during his tenure 2016/2017 session, they requested for the extension of examination period from two weeks to three which the management graciously approved. “The current students are benefiting with our struggle,” he said.
Speaking earlier, the Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. Shamsuddeen Umar, said the University management considers students partners in progress. He expressed willingness to continue to collaborate with the student leaders to improve the welfare of students.
Other dignitaries at the occasion were the Director of Sports, Usman Salihu, Director, Mambayya House, Professor Ismail Zango, Director Public Affairs, Ahmed Shehu, Deputy Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. Hajara Umar Sanda, coaches of the Sports Directorate and many students.
It will be recalled that upon submission made to the University Management by the Director Public Affairs on the need to honour students who represented the university at various competitions and won medals. The Principal Officers at their 11th (2019) meeting held 30th August, 2019 requested for the compilation of list of all those students.
